In the late seventies, Eddie Van Halen unleashed a guitar revolution by taking matters into his own hands and slapping a humbucker onto an ST-style axe, marking the dawn of the Superstrat! From that moment on, Eddie tirelessly tinkered and tweaked until he’d developed what he saw as the ultimate guitar. The EVH Wolfgang Special is the fruit of those labours and is quite rightly deemed a legend in its own right. From the iconic shape of the solid basswood body and the effortless feel of the neck, to the mounted EVH branded Floyd Rose Locking Tremolo bridge, D-Tuna and custom-designed Wolfgang humbuckers, this model comes fully reinforced by Eddie’s masterful seal of approval.
A Touch of Eddie
Many of the design features of Eddie’s own Wolfgang are present. So the heel has been comfortably rounded off to ease fret reach, while the maple neck has been sealed with a buttery-soft, hand-rubbed urethane finish and the fretboard boasts the reliable grip of a compound radius. And, just like the original, the two Wolfgang Special pickups have been direct-mounted.
Unique Electronics
While you might not think it, Eddie Van Halen actually preferred medium output humbuckers, and as such, the pair of exclusively developed Wolfgang humbuckers deliver exactly the level of precision and dynamic response you’d expect. This is framed by delicious biting trebles, well-defined mids and an impressive bottom end, while the medium output boasts a touch more flexibility than high-output variants, and is able to scroll through everything from screaming leads to fat metal riffs; from classic rock to sugar-coated ballads. This elastic sonic setup is given the full support of a detailed electronics layout, including a low-friction volume control for carving out those illustrious violin-style effects.
